Sam Horrix, aged nine, from Ilkley deserves to be smiling. He won the Under-10 County Match Play tennis tournament at Hull last weekend. The two-day event saw 16 of the top players from Yorkshire and surrounding counties battle it out.
Sam, who was seeded two at the start, went through the first two rounds comfortably to then face a gruelling match against A Richardson lasting over two hours. Sam lost the first set 7/5 and was down in the second set 5/2. Sheer determination brought him through to win the second set 7/5, then he went on to take the third 6/4.
Sam played T Chadwick in the final that had beaten the number one seed in an earlier round 6/2, 6/2. Powerful, consistent play and good placing of the ball saw him win the championship 6/2, 6/4.
