More than 400 runners took to the woods and canal towpaths around Esholt when Guiseley-based Skyrac AC hosted their fifth annual Guiseley Gallop multi-terrain 10km race.

The traditional Easter Sunday fixture was a dead heat for two top Bingley stars.

Andrew Pearson, the former European cross country bronze medallist, tied with fellow international John Taylor, who has earned his England colours over the fells, in a time of 35min 24sec.

In third place, 21 seconds adrift, was Pearson's elder brother, Batley-based postman Michael who runs under the colours of Longwood Harriers, ahead of Leeds City's Trevor Wilks and Calverley's Paul Stevenson (Pudsey and Bramley).

First veteran over 40 was Eddie Shaw of Northern Vets, with Ilkley Harrier Nick Pearce taking the over-45s award in 18th overall (40-17).

Halifax Harrier Walt Stewart was first in the over-50s' section in 42-52.

Sally Leslie, nee Ramsdale, a former English schools champion and junior international from Hawksworth, had an easy victory in the women's race. Leslie, who now lives in Frieburg in Germany, finished 48 seconds clear of Keighley and Craven veteran Elizabeth Tomes, with Bingley's Mary Green third in 45-06.

Pudsey and Bramley's Rob Hope took a well earned third place at one of the oldest fell races in the country.

Despite heavy conditions and torrential rain, Hope, who lives at Guiseley, ran a strong race in the Rivington Pike Classic near Bolton. But he was out-gunned by Birchfield Harrier Mike Bouldridge and Salford's Scottish international and Inter-counties fell champion Neil Wilkinson.

The big event on the weekend fixture card is Sunday's Yorkshire Dales Three Peaks race from Horton-in-Ribblesdale (10am).

Bingley international Ian Holmes, who has won the race previously, is expected to contest the 23-mile Marathon In The Hills, and on recent form should do well.

The race encompasses round two of the six-race English Championship Grand Prix, which Holmes leads after a convincing victory at the Wrekin race in Shropshire last month.
