An award-winning historic pub is up for sale and is expected to attract offers of around £165,000.

The sale of the Old Silent Inn at Stanbury, near Haworth, follows the decision of owner Mark Narey to concentrate on other business interests.

"I have been here for about six years and I have enjoyed it, but I am now wanting to devote more time to other business concerns," he said. The pub, which dates back more than 400 years, has featured in publications ranging from top travel guides to fictional works.

Last summer it was voted Pub of the Year in a national competition following nominations from its customers and mystery visits from a judging panel.

The Old Silent - which has formerly been known as the Eagle and the New Inn - derives its current name from the book Wicroft of Withens by Halliwell Sutcliffe, which tells the story of how Bonnie Prince Charlie hid at the inn and relied on the silence of locals for his safety.

The pub also lays claim to various spooky sightings, from a headless soldier to a ghostly bell, and it has featured on Sky TV's Y Files. Leigh Parsons, who is handling the sale for Christie & Co, said: "Situated in an area of spectacular moorland scenery, the Old Silent is superbly placed to take full advantage of the year-round tourist and local trade.

"With its impressive and widespread reputation we are sure it will attract early interest from prospective buyers looking for an established food-led operation."
