Travellers could soon be booking a bed at Harry Ramsden's world famous Guiseley fish and chip shop if plans to build a travel lodge get the go ahead.

Granada, which took over Harry Ramsden's fish restaurants at the end of last year, has applied to build a two storey, 40-bed travel lodge at Ramsdens in Guiseley - the home of the world famous restaurant chain.

But residents are concerned that the lodge, planned for the car park, will bring no benefits to Guiseley and just add to increased amounts of traffic expected with other planned developments on the White Cross roundabout.

Graham Hoult, chairman of Guiseley and Menston Green Belt Action Group (GAMBAG), said although the lodge was not planned for open land it would have other negative effects on the area.

And he added with other planned developments, including 50 homes behind Greenwoods Menswear and a golf course at Thorpe Farm, it would increase pressure on the roundabout.

"When Granada bought the company last year we could have guaranteed that this was going to happen," he said. "Granada think it is an ideal place for a travel lodge."

Mr Hoult added he could see no benefits for the local community.

"We would like Leeds City Council to sit down and look at all the plans for the area and see which one is going to be the best for the community," he said.

"Employment in the area will be minimal, all this is going to be another assault on the White Cross roundabout."

A spokesman for Granada, which includes Travel Lodge and Little Chef, said the plan was at a very early stage but confirmed the company was seeking detailed planning consent for a standard 40 bed travel lodge.
