Musically-minded fundraisers are tuning up for an event aimed at producing notes of a different kind.

They will be taking part in a concert at Bradford Cathedral which is expected to be part of the world's largest simultaneous singalong.

It has been organised by the city's Marie Curie Cancer Care hospice appeal and Manorlands Sue Ryder Palliative Care Centre in Oxenhope to support BT Voices for Hospices 2000.

The aim of the event is to raise awareness of palliative care units and further boost the funds of the £5.2 million Marie Curie Bradford appeal.

Activities have been organised in more than 40 countries across the world and the culmination will be a joint singing of the Hallelujah Chorus.

The concert, on Saturday, October 14, will feature the sounds of Thornton Vocal Union and the Skelmanthorpe Brass Band.

And it promises to be stirring stuff with audiences being treated to a programme of music from the Last Night of the Proms.

Sarah Towns, Marie Curie's Bradford fundraising assistant, said: "We are looking forward to working together with Manorlands to raise vital funds to support both centres. This is an exciting world-wide event which is encouraging the development of palliative care across the globe."

Chris Brown, fundraiser at Manorlands, said: "Back in 1994 I attended a joint concert between Marie Curie and Manorlands and it was a great success. I hope that this year's will be as successful, if not better."

Tickets for the concert, priced £6 and £5 for concessions, will be available nearer the date from the Marie Curie Bradford Appeal Office or Manorlands.
