IN the recent SKU First Premier Championship at Stalybridge, Cheshire, members of the Seishin-Ryu squad of the Baildon Karate Club took part in Kata and Kumite events.

Marcus Tan Wei Heng, aged 11 years, and his brother Declan Tan Wei Leng, aged eight years, who attend Menston Primary School. Both won first place titles in the Cadet Third to First kyu 12 years and under kata and the eighth to fourth kyu 12 years and under kata events respectively.

Their fellow competitor James Pickles, 13 year-old St Mary's School, Menston, aged 13 years, also achieved a first place title in the Third kyu and above kata event for 13 to 15-year-olds and first place in the cadet black belt under 5ft kumite event. Matthew Patterson, a pupil at Guiseley School, aged 13, also from Menston, achieved third place in the third to first kyu kata event for 13 to 15-year-olds and also second place in the cadet brown belt under 5ft kumite event. Fourteen-year-old Sean Richardson, of Baildon, achieved first place in the cadet brown belt under 5ft kumite event.

Heather Graham, a resident of the Baildon community, achieved first place in the eighth to fourth kyu Junior Adult kata event. She also managed to battle her way to second place in the adult female sixth to fourth kyu kumite event and Jackie Renton, a teacher from Baildon, gained a third place in the eight to fourth kyu Junior Adult kata event.

Sensei J Tan, instructor of the Seishin-Ryu Club, Baildon, successfully graded to Fourth Dan whilst on the Gashuku Instructor's course in Ibiza.

Marcus Tan Wei Heng, won the Annual Seishin-Rhu Karate Junior Merit Award, 1999, and Sally Edmondson, won the annual Seishin-Ryu Karate Club Senior Merit Award.
