A young diabetic boy from Oakworth is to climb Helvellyn, in the Lake District, and prove that diabetes need not put an end to an active life.
Charlie Whitaker, 9, of Apsley Street, plans to conquer the 3,116ft Cumbrian peak in August, accompanied by his dad, Greg, his two brothers Laurence, 11, and George, 7, and a number of other friends and fellow climbers.
All the money raised by the sponsored ascent will go to Airedale hospital's diabetic unit which has been monitoring Charlie's condition since he was diagnosed last June.
Dad Greg says: "We all used to do a lot of climbing and walking. He wants to do it to prove to people you can carry on and make people aware of the condition."
Charlie, a pupil of Haworth Primary School, has to have twice daily insulin injections, and has only just started walking and climbing again with his family.
Anyone wanting to sponsor Charlie on his climb should call 01535 646482.
