Denholme Cricket Club stalwart, Jack Spencer, died suddenly after collapsing at his home in Cullingworth, he was 61 years of age.

Mr Spencer had suffered from a heart condition for some time and after retiring from Yorkshire Electricity dedicated himself to the club he had served since a child.

He was born and brought up in Denholme and lived in the village until moving to Cullingworth a few years ago.

He played cricket and football for the village teams and went on to become chairman of the club, a post he held for many years. Later he was elected President.

He was a very active worker for the club working on the ground and carrying out maintenance work throughout the winter months.

He had been an umpire in the Bradford Central League for several years, but following his club's move to the Craven League at the start of the current season had been looking forward to visiting new grounds.

He and his wife, Rosemary, have four sons, Jack, Neil, paul and Ian.

"He has been a stalwart of Denholme CC and will be sadly missed by everyone connected with the club," said secretary Peter Baron.
