Stars of TV comedy sketch show Goodness Gracious Me have been picked to unveil a colourful facelift at a police station dubbed 'fortress' by locals.
The angular and imposing structure of Toller Lane's Lawcroft House police headquarters has earned it the nickname but residents are now being given a chance to transform its daunting appearance by submitting designs for six large canvas sails which will adorn the supporting wall.
And the results will be seen at a special open day in September, when the cast of the BBC television comedy series reveal the winning designs for the first time.
The police station, in Lilycroft Road, was built on the site of an old dam and on a sloping road. Architects included the supporting wall to shore up the foundations.
They form part of an ongoing project to brighten up the appearance of the police station. Other features could include shrubs and flowers and multi-lingual information boards. The logos are seen as a way of softening the appearance of the police station while reflecting the thoug hts of the local community.
Toller Lane Inspector Brian Langford, said: "We want people to take an active part in shaping the look and feel of this police station.
"It forms the heart of this neighbourhood, and we want to break down the barriers and let people know it can form a part of their daily life."
Schools, youth clubs, mosques, community centres and other local groups have already been approached to submit designs for the sails.
Insp Langford said: "The design has to be a reflection or statement of what is important to those who live in Bradford."
The cost of the sails will be met by West Yorkshire Police and sponsorship from local businesses.
The competition is open to anyone. Six individual winners from four age groups will each receive £250. For an application form and pack contact Insp Langford on Bradford 376255.
