A KEEN archer whose aim has been to encourage youngsters into the sport has hit the target - and been presented with a top award.

Nick Beeson, 46, of Alexandra Place, Ilkley, was nominated for the Yorkshire Sword by the Yorkshire Archery Association.

The coveted Sword is presented to the person who has done the most to promote the sport in the previous year - and Mr Beeson has certainly been doing his bit to raise the profile of archery.

The IT manager, who shoots with the Bowmen of Adel, has implemented a structured and ambitious programme for the development of youngsters in archery, in Yorkshire.

Mr Beeson, who has three children - Cassie, 14, Sandy, 11, and Helena, eight - is also the junior officer for the county.

He said: "Youngsters are the future of any sport, and helping them develop is one of the most important tasks of our organisation. Archery is a sport that the whole family can take up. My wife and three children all shoot, and can play a full part in the community."

Mr Beeson has also developed the YAA website and organised the County Clout Championships, is secretary of his club - and still finds time for the occasional shoot.

Mr Beeson had his first taste of the sport at university and began training in earnest five years ago - as a means of spending more time with his children.

He has always been focused towards keeping the sport alive for future generations - and says he is thrilled to receive the YAA award.

He said: "It means a great deal to be granted an award. It is not an award that is given by the committee. It is voted on by all the clubs in the county.

It is voted for by my peers and that means an awful lot to me. It is recognition that what I am doing is appreciated and is on the right track."
