Singer Craig Carlisle has won a major Millennium award in the Yorkshire heartland of working men's clubs.

The popular performer picked up the prize for "best vocalist and all-round performer" from the Wakefield, Pontefract and District Federation of Concert Secretaries.

He was invited to sing at the federation's Millennium awards night last week and received a framed certificate and crystal goblet.

He showed off the talent that now brings him regular bookings up to five times a week across the North of England. Craig rose to fame on the Keighley music circuit by fronting popular bands such as Young Gifted and White and Supanova.

Most of Craig's present work is in working men's clubs and he finds time only two or three times a year to perform in Keighley.

With increasing success Craig was able to leave his factory job, but recently had to return to day work - with a Skipton mortgage company - following the birth of his son.

He says: "It's quite difficult. I take a lot of care and look after myself - going to bed early and not doing much at weekends.

"I used to throw beer around and party when I was performing, but now I stay in the dressing room and have a cup of tea."

During the award ceremony Craig performed on a bill that included club singer and TV personality Sasha Lawrence. Prizes were given for other categories such as comedians and duos.

Craig will sing at Wibsey Slackside WMC on Sunday and Baildon Woodbottom Club the following Saturday.
