New names will be inscribed on both Craven Cricket League knockout trophies this season.
The holders of the Wynn Cup and the Cowling Cup both went out at the second round stage after giving up ground advantage.
In the senior competition, Pendle Forest switched their tie to Oakworth to accommodate their second team, who at least provided the consolation of a comfortable win. At Cure Hill, the picture was quite different for the Fence side, although in restricting Oakworth to 129-9, they must have fancied their chances.
Nick Swinbank (40) and Peter Atkinson (30) proved that runs were to be had, but the rest of the side could muster only 27 between them and the home side got home by 32 runs.
Cowling made early headway at Embsay when they had three men of the home side in the pavilion for 28, but it proved to be a false dawn. Duncan Bullough (85), Zufar Iqbal (43) and Jason Waddington (54) were all in the groove and enabled Embsay to close at 203-7. The visitors made a solid start with 39 for the first wicket, but then fell away badly, Simon Spencer offering some resistance with a defiant 40 before Cowling were bowled out for 154.
A desperately close tie at Cononley saw Airedale getting through with a run off the last ball. The visitors paid the price for dropping Roger Nelson (78) early on as he piloted his side to 172 at the close, Ben Guest battling valiantly to keep the lid on proceedings with a 7-54 haul.
Nelson's escape was to be mirrored by a similar let-off for Airedale opener Martin Cox, which proved to be even more influential. He went on to make 98 and although he finally fell in the last over with his side still needing four to win, Andy Gill scored the match-winning single off the last ball of the match.
Skipton CI gained revenge for a narrow defeat at Barrowford the previous day when they comfortably moved into Round Three at Bull Holme. Kieran Coe was the match-winner with a superb 112 which helped his side to 199-6 in the 45 overs, a total which was always going to be a problem for the home side after they had lost their first five wickets for 40.
Like Pendle Forest firsts, Embsay Seconds were left to regret a change of venue when they gave their worst batting display of the season to be all out for 103 at Thornton. Mark Paxton's 5-40 did the damage and although Thornton did not have things all their own way, they got home with five wickets in hand.
Unlike their seniors, Pendle Forest seconds were always in control against Cononley. Rowland Lyons (73) and Mick Holdsworth (49) steered them to a healthy 223-7 and the bowlers did the rest, putting the visitors out for 89.
Nine-man Cowling paid the price for being short-handed at Carleton, where the home side amassed 198-9, Neville Allen (55) and John Tatham (46) the chief contributors. Cowling reached 156-8 in reply, Ian Watson hitting a defiant 83.
