MATTHEW Howie (above) broke off revising for his GCSEs to turn in a winning display in the Bradford Union Junior Golf Championships at Cleckheaton.
The Skipton Golf Club junior captain, who finished his exams at Ermysted's this week, returned the best score in the Second Division of the competition with a nett 67 off his 13 handicap. He was helped by four threes in a row, including a pair of birdies on the back nine, which he played in a gross 38. He was also helped by chipping for a par three on the fifth after hitting his tee shot into a ditch.
Howie took up golf four years ago and is rarely seen away from the Skipton course - although he will be attending all four days of this year's Open Championship at St Andrews with fellow Skipton member, Paul Bevington.
With his father, Craig, he has reached the fifth round of the national Daily Mail Foursomes Knockout tournament in which they will play a combination from Ogden, Halifax at home.
He also plays cricket for Embsay Juniors.
