SEVEN groups of students from two schools have taken part in a prestigious event.
The occasion was the final presentation of work from this year's Mathematics Project between St Mary's RC Comprehensive School at Menston and Ampleforth College at York.
It took place at St Mary's when seven groups of Year 10 students (four per group with two from each school) presented their work to an audience of staff, students and governors of both establishments.
The work was judged by Prof David Rhodes of Filtronics plc, and Dr Reg Allenby, of the University of Leeds.
During the past year, 24 groups of students set out to solve a series of complex open-ended problems. Weekly exchanges of solutions and ideas were passed via e-mail, and then the groups met to evaluate and combine their pieces into a final form.
Michael Pyle, head teacher of St Mary's, said: "We are delighted to have been involved in this Government initiative. I am sure the pupils from Ampleforth and St Mary's have benefited socially and academically from working to a common purpose using modern day technology. l
