A stand-off has been reached between residents living in a Brontland cul-de-sac and council cleansing officers in a row over wheelie bins.

On one side are the home owners in Fairway Crescent, Haworth near the junction of Hebden Road and Brow Road, who are refusing to push their bins up to 100 yards to the end of the road.

On the other are the bin men who have issued ' red cards' and are refusing to go down the Crescent to collect them. They say they can't reach the bins because of parked cars blocking the road.

Resident Hazel Scriven says the introduction of the bins went without hitch at first. "We were just parking them out the front of our houses and they were coming along and collecting them.

"But last Friday they didn't bring them back and stuck a red sticker on them saying: "This is your new collection point," says Mrs Scriven.

The designated collection point is at the end of the cul-de-sac on the steeply sloping Brow Road - a notorious accident blackspot..

Says neighbour Elsie Steele: "There's no way I'm going to push the bin to the end of the road because it's notorious for craches."

The council's bin men refuse to collect the wheelie bins unless they are left at the collection point or unless they can reverse their wagon to the end of the road.

Parked cars often block the road and so the bins are left unemptied.

Mary Munnerley says: "If there are any cars parked here they won't come. They simply take a look at the end and move on. They have said it's our responsibility to make sure there's no cars left in the Crescent."

Mrs Steele adds: "We can't be out here at 8 o'clock in the morning checking cars, can we?"

Mrs Scriven adds: "It's now the principle of the thing. When they used to collect bags they used to get them from Hebden Road. We used to take the bags all the way down there and I think most people in the road are just sick of doing their job for them."

The Council's cleansing department says: "It is too narrow for the bin wagon to get down when cars are parked there. We have leafleted residents asking them not to leave their cars there on collection day and put stickers on the cars pointing out that we cannot get down to empty the bins while their cars are there.

"Unfortunately some residents have ignored this so we have had to ask people to take their bins to the end of the Crescent at its junction with Brow Road."
