A Liversedge man viciously attacked as he walked home from the pub with his girlfriend has spoken of his terrifying ordeal.
Andy Kennedy, 37, of Fifth Avenue, Hightown, was seriously assaulted by a gang of four men in a seemingly unprovoked attack on Friday, June 30.
His jaw was broken in three places, two teeth were knocked out and he was repeatedly kicked about the head.
He still remains clueless as to the motive for the attack because nothing was stolen from him or his partner, Lisa, and he said he had no known enemies.
"This has never happened to me before and I don't know why it did this time," said Mr Kennedy, who has three children. "I wouldn't say this area is renowned for attacks like this.
"I'm more likely to keep looking behind me now when I'm walking about, but I'm not afraid to go out at all," said Mr Kennedy, who has lived in the Hightown area all his life. "It has shocked me, obviously, but you've just got to get on with things, haven't you?"
Unable to remember much about the attack, Mr Kennedy, who works as a ventilation hygiene technician in Mirfield, said he didn't want to waste time thinking about the thugs who attacked him.
"The incident is just a blank now and I don't think about those who did it," he said. "We were walking home from the pub around midnight minding our own business and they came from behind me and knocked me down. Apparently they just kept on kicking me but I can't remember because I was knocked out."
He was taken by ambulance to Dewsbury District Hospital where he spent the night and was transferred to Bradford Royal Infirmary on Saturday.
On Sunday, he underwent a jaw operation in which his gums were cut open and three plates inserted to help the bones heal. He has no idea when he will be fit enough to return to work and is having weekly check-ups at hospital.
The incident happened in Third Avenue on the estate at its junction with Ninth Avenue. Police say one of the youths, who were white, may have carried a baseball bat. They are appealing for people to come forward with any information. Detective Sergeant Gary Holberry can be contacted at Dewsbury police on (01924) 431059.
