A Bradford craftswoman and entrepreneur has set up the city's first 'drop-in' pottery workshop.

Helen Kemp, who runs a gift shop in Victoria Road, Saltaire, is the main organiser of the venture which will cater for people of all abilities.

The Phoenix Pottery in Dyson Yard, Dyson Street, Heaton, Bradford, will offer shared workshop facilities and open workshop sessions for experienced potters, as well as classes and Saturday schools for beginners which will start next month.

"There isn't really anywhere in Bradford where people can go along and make their pots, call in when they like and stay as long as they like," said Ms Kemp. "When you learn pottery at a college you can only go along when the classes are on, and usually get chucked out by the caretaker."

Based in two workshops, there is a room for 'throwing' the clay with four wheels, and a number of workbenches and various tools. The other room will focus on glazing and houses the two kilns. "It's all about people making what they want to make," added the 54-year-old who taught pottery at Shipley College for 15 years.

"I believe very strongly that people should be encouraged to be more creative - nothing would make me happier than if someone went away from here to do a proper ceramics course and applied for a grant and set themselves up."

Ms Kemp has funded the venture herself and has also been supported by two other people. Once it is fully up-and-running she intends to apply for grants. She also aims to hold mini-craft fairs.

"A lot of people have a full time job with lots of stress and responsibilities and have little time in their lives for leisure," added Ms Kemp. "But something like pottery is a wonderful way for you to find out about yourself and your natural rhythms.''

The pottery workshop will be holding an open evening on Wednesday, September 13, from 7pm. If you're interested in using the workshop or attending classes, ring (01274) 401029. Costs will vary, depending on the level of involvement.
