One of the smallest fields for many years will start out for the re-arranged 36-hole Amateur Strokeplay Championship at Northcliffe on Sunday.

Mark Evans, from West Bradford, will face up to just 37 rivals when he defends the title.

But a clash with a Yorkshire Order of Merit event at Howley Hall and a county match robs the field of several key names.

Among them is Evans's West Bradford clubmate Darryl Berry, who will be playing for Yorkshire in the key Northern Counties League clash with Cumbria at Carlisle the day before, and who lost his chance of defending the matchplay title when failing to finish in the top 16 amateurs in the Bradford Open at Shipley ten days ago.

Sure to be one of the favourites on his home course is Simon Bell, who reached the last eight at the English amateur championship last week before going out to eventual runner-up Gary Wolstenholme.

He is one of six golfers from the Scratch League champions taking part and runners-up Baildon supply another seven of the 38 entry.

The ill-fated scratchplay was reduced to just 18 holes last year and abandoned when Bingley St Ives was flooded last month.

Only 16 of the remaining field will be eligible to score points for the Jim Wade Trophy, awarded annually to the best aggregate score from the strokeplay and Bradford Open.
