Replacement signs explaining the history and sights of Saltaire have been unveiled - more than a year after the originals were taken down because of embarrassing errors.

Five information plaques have been designed to help tourists learn more about the model village and its founder Sir Titus Salt.

Bradford Council was forced to scrap the first batch after villagers noticed they were littered with errors, including the wrong birth date of Sir Titus Salt, misleading directions to shops and an incorrect coat of arms for the Salt family.

Councillor Ann Hawkesworth, the Council's executive member for the environment, said: "Saltaire is a unique attraction and these new information panels will give people a feel for the village and what it has to offer at a glance.

"It's unfortunate that the first signs produced last year contained errors but we've consulted local historian Clive Woods from the Saltaire Village Society on the new panels and I'm sure they will be much appreciated by visitors."

The new signs have been placed in Exhibition Road car park, Caroline Street car park, beside the Leeds/Liverpool canal, in Salts Mill Road and in Roberts Park.

Mr Woods said: "We are delighted with them. They look excellent and will be very useful. I'm just glad that they have finally been sorted out.

"There are so many people who come to Saltaire and have no idea what they are walking into. These signs are an introduction to the village for these visitors."

Among the sights listed on the plaques is the statue of Sir Titus Salt, Salts Mill, Roberts Park, Victoria Hall and The Almshouses.

Councillor David Herdson (Con, Shipley West) said: "I really think they are going to be very effective and they add to Saltaire's tourist-friendliness.

"Saltaire is generating large numbers of tourists and although we have very good guides some people want to explore by themselves."

The signs have been paid for with money from Saltaire's sponsorship pot set up by local businesses and organisations such as Pace, Filtronic, British Waterways and Salts Estates Ltd.
