Long Lee Juniors under 14s team maintained their superb record in the Yorkshire Cup last week despite narrowly missing out on a place in the final.
The team, made up entirely of local Keighley lads, took part in the Yorkshire Cup in Huddersfield for the seventh year running after qualifying by finishing in second place in their group.
Manager Steve Holmes says the team fought through some hard opening matches against opposition teams which included players taken from top clubs. One of Long Lees' best scalps was that of Space, the Huddersfield footballing academy.
In the semi-final Long Lee faced Meltham and held a 1-0 lead courtesy of Daniel Hegarty until the last five minutes.
Meltham having equalised the match went into extra time which finished goal-less despite Long Lee having some good scoring chances.
The match then went to penalties which proved the undoing of Long Lee when they let a 3-1 advantage slip and went out in a sudden death shoot out.
Despite the failure of the team to get to the final Steve Holmes said the players did tremendously well.
"They did Keighley football, and junior Keighley football in particular, really proud," says Steve.
"They have been in the competition for the last seven years and have never finished below the top four," he adds.
n Oakworth Under-14's enjoyed a successful four days at the Yorkshire Cup competition held in Huddersfield.
Oaks remained unbeaten in the group stage with victories over Mirfield (4-1), Liversedge (5-1), Siddal Vale from Halifax (8-1) and Manchester side Duckenfield (2-0). They also drew with Meltham (2-2) and Spen Valley (3-3).
They finished runners-up behind Meltham at the end of the group stage to qualify for the semi-final against Salthill from Ireland, but were beaten 1-0 when the Irish lads scored with just two minutes to go. Salthill went on to beat Meltham 6-0 in the final.
