Dudley Hill 38, West Bowling 14

Dudley Hill clinched the annual York-shire Challenge Trophy at Parry Lane with this deserved victory over Confer-ence rivals West Bowling.

The competition was reduced to three teams after Undercliffe's late withdrawal, and with Clayton beaten twice it was left to Hill and Bowling to contest the final.

Bowling took the lead after four minutes with a penalty from Sean Fallon, but Hill went in front when Danny Whiteley broke the defence to send in Kirk Johnson from 40 yards for a try, the conversion being landed by Chris Moxon.

Moxon was on target again with a penalty before Reuben Joseph scored under the posts after good work from Marco Rossi and Whiteley. Moxon accepted the easy conversion.

Towards the end of the first half Bowling closed the gap when they were awarded a penalty try for Martin Tordoff when he was impeded trying to ground the ball. Fallon converted.

After the break new signing Mark Gibson, playing at scrum half, danced his way through the defence to touch down next to the posts which gave Moxon another easy conversion.

Bowling clawed their way back when a short pass from Fallon to Paul Gardner opened the Hill defence and he raced in under the posts for a well-worked try converted by Fallon.

Richard Barnett, who was voted man of the competition, then showed his pace and power when he scored two unconverted tries. At this stage Hill were in charge and had three tries disallowed for forward passes.

Seventeen-year-old substitute Jamie Brentley was next to score when he slipped through the defence to score a try converted by Moxon.

A sweeping move just before the final whistle completed the scoring, Kirk Johnson outpacing four defenders down the left wing.
