SIR - I found the article by Jim Appleby in your series Past Times very interesting (T&A, August 2), particularly the information about the Blythe and Berwick haulage and transport company.

It reminded me of a bus service they ran between Bradford and Harrogate, via Shipley and Otley. It was known as the "B&B" and the company's coaches were much more comfortable than those of Bradford Corporation's trams or buses, or Hebble and West Yorkshire Road Car Company's vehicles.

Living in Menston at the time, our family used the B&B regularly and caught the bus home from Bradford opposite the Princes Theatre, where now stands the Mecca Bingo and Ice Rink.

In those days before the war, buses for destinations beyond the city boundary lined up down the 'war memorial side' of Little Horton Lane and on Chester Street, the years before Chester Street was made into a proper bus station.

I wonder if any readers also remember the Moorfield Bus Company - vehicles coloured orange - which operated in the Guiseley and Otley area?

SIR - I am interested in tracing the history of two former Bradford transport companies - Henry Long and J G Fielder. Can any of your readers give me an insight into either of these companies eg where they were based and what they carried?

Does any reader have any memories or photos they may be prepared to part with? Please could they write to me at the address below.

SIR - I agree with Victoria Farnell. Yorkshire Day is not properly celebrated. Here in Shipley this year we did at least fly the Yorkshire Flag from the Town Hall. But next year we're planning something bigger.

Shipley, at the heart of Yorkshire, will hopefully be staging a spectacular day in celebration of Yorkshire. Brass band, Yorkshire Market, the reading of the Integrity of the Three Ridings, fun and games culminating in the evening with a Yorkshire dinner.

If Veronica Farnell would like to get in touch with me, I'd be happy to invite her to Shipley's Yorkshire Day celebrations, 2001.

Councillor John Carroll (Shipley West Ward), Bradford Road, Shipley

SIR - Yet again we hear of our police resources being stretched to the limit, but while the city is in the grip of anarchy and lawlessness the police can find time and resources to co-ordinate more roadside checks on the motorists whose only interest is in making an honest living.

I suppose the small percentage of arrests made will go to reducing their crime figures.

It is time the West Yorkshire police got their priorities right and started protecting the public who pay their wages.

SIR - Re "Great Yorkshire Show, shame about the buses" (Letters, August 4).

We went to the Great Yorkshire Show on the last day, Thursday. We went to Harrogate on the train from Bradford, changed at Leeds. No problems. Then we got the special bus to the show ground.

On the return journey of our lovely day out, we arrived in Bradford in good time for the 637 Clayton bus (8pm). They are half-hourly after 6pm. Some people had already been in the queue 20 minutes.

No 8pm bus came. The next bus, 636, came at 8.30pm. We had to get that and walk on Pasture Lane in the rain.

That last hour of what would have been a perfect day was spoilt by the bus service.

Mrs J Butterfield, Pasture Rise, Clayton.

SIR - Hello from Australia! It's wonderful to be able to access my home town paper - the Telegraph & Argus - on the Internet. I've just reached the 25-year mark since I emigrated with my family but have continued to visit on several occasions.

It's ironic that I live in a suburb called Manningham - named after the one in Bradford by early settlers to our suburb. We are 6km out of Adelaide.

Incidentally, I am keen to hear from friends from my school days at Hanson School, Swain House - from the early 1970s. I would love to catch up during a planned trip to the UK next year.
