A MAN has died and his wife injured following a road accident near Long Preston on Sunday.

Thomas Woodrup, 69, of Kendal Road, Hellifield, was killed in a four-vehicle collision on the A65 at Settle Junction at about 3pm.

His wife Joan, 56, had to be airlifted to Lancaster Royal Infirmary where she was still being cared for yesterday (Thursday), suffering bruising and shock.

The incident occurred when a silver Honda 4x4 car travelling towards Skipton was in collision with three other vehicles travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the Honda, George Parker, 43, of Keighley, and his passenger, his six-year-old son, Isaac, both suffered minor injuries. They were taken to Airedale Hospital where Mr Parker was kept in for observation and discharged this week.

The Honda had been in collision with an MG driven by Mike Lee, of Lytham, who was not injured, a Vauxhall Midi Van, driven by Stephen Martin, 40, of Giggleswick, who was also unhurt, and the Escort driven by Mr Woodrup.

The road was blocked whilst police officers dealt with the injured and moved the vehicles.

Mr Woodrup, who was known as Tommy, had lived in Halton West and later Hellifield for many years. He used to work for Waddington's at Halton West, and he had three children and one grandchild.

PC Paul Cockerill, of Skipton's Road Policing Unit, would like to speak to anyone who saw the incident or anyone who saw the silver Honda before the accident. He can be contacted on 01756 793377.
