A Keighley councillor has resigned as a governor of Oakbank School because he is tired of the education system.

Labour councillor Martin Leathley was one of two local authority representatives on the school's board of governors.

Cllr Leathley's resignation last month came at a time when the school faces widespread criticism on its new uniform policy.

The governing body's decision to limit sales of its new blazer to one Keighley store has fuelled a parents' campaign.

But Cllr Leathley says: "My resignation has nothing to do with this issue, but I do think they've got themselves into a tangle over that.

"It's the whole drift of education in this country; the fact it's been decided education will be effectively taken out of the council's hands and passed to a private company.

"I strongly disapprove of that and feel things generally are going in the wrong direction.

"The situation is all a bit hopeless and nothing is being done locally or nationally to improve it.

"There wasn't a great deal of point in carrying on, and I needed to cut my commitments."

It is not yet known who will replace Cllr Leathley and join remaining Labour LEA representative Rita Goulden on the board.

But May's change of council means a Conservative member will fill the seat.
