A TEENAGE boy broke his leg while walking on Ilkley Moor with his family yesterday. The 13-year-old fell while walking near White Wells. Paramedics rushed to the scene and an ambulance, from Menston Station, made its way up a narrow track to the historic spa. Fire crew from Ilkley and Rawdon were also called to help carry the boy away from the scene. The youngster was taken to Airedale Hospital by ambulance. Frazer Irwin, Ilkley resident and local historian, saw the ambulances and fire crew arrive at the scene. He said: "I heard the sirens down the hill and wondered what was happening." Mr Irwin said he was concerned that people were not always aware of the risks of walking on the moor. He said: "People come to Ilkley to walk on the moor, without realising what the moor is like. It is not a city park. It is wild, stony and boggy. It has got to be treated with respect. Sometimes people do not wear the right clothes and footwear." It is not known what caused the boy to fall.
