Firefighters arrived at a blazing Bradford house to find its occupants trapped in the smoke-filling kitchen.

The crews broke through an exterior door before freeing four residents who had suffered the effects of smoke.

The blaze, at Lingdale Road, Woodside, Bradford, is believed to have been started by children. Odsal Fire Station Officer Frank Hutchinson said his men were called to the scene at 12.43pm on Saturday.

He said: "We were told that four people were still in the house and on arrival we could see that the first floor was heavily smoke logged.

"There were four people in the kitchen. They couldn't get out because the door was locked and the only key was in an upstairs bedroom."

Mr Hutchinson said a woman in the kitchen had become hysterical and firefighters reassured her.

After breaking through the door with ramming equipment, the crew quickly freed the occupants - three adults and a teenager - who were taken to hospital for precautionary checks.

Two children had already passed out of downstairs window to safety. Officers entered the house to douse the flames.

The spokesman said concerns had been raised over one female who suffered from asthma. But after receiving a check up at Bradford Royal Infirmary, all were released.

Mr Hutchinson said: "The back bedroom where the fire was totally gutted and there was heavy smoke logging to the first floor."

The fire - which has left the family homeless - is believed to have been started when two children were playing with matches and cigarettes.
