Horsforth is the most affluent ward in Leeds, according to a new Government survey.
The findings, from Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott's Environment, Transport and the Regions Department (DETR), form part of one of the most detailed local government studies of England ever done.
Horsforth, believed by locals to be the largest village in the
country, took 7,502nd place in the table, narrowly ahead of nearest rival Wetherby, which is on 7,497th place.
The news was welcomed by Councillor Brian Cleasby (Lib Dem, Horsforth), who put the
findings down to Horsfordians' community spirit.
But he also launched an attack on Leeds City Council, claiming the local authority had neglected the area.
Coun Cleasby said: "These findings don't surprise me. Horsforth people have worked hard to retain their community spirit and there is a real village feel to Horsforth.
"Our position, however, is no thanks to the city council. They have done little to support us."
