Thai boxer Karl Stoddart is going into battle in Scotland this weekend, with an oriental trick or two up his sleeve.
The 21-year-old Queensbury man spent three weeks in southern Thailand training with former world champion Theiab Noonoung and, even though he is a novice, braved the punches to compete in a professional bout while over there.
On Saturday he is on the undercard on a bill in Scotland and is confident the tips he picked up while in Trang will give the extra advantage over his opponent.
"It was just little things like defensive moves and skilful attacking ones I picked up that should really help me," said Karl.
"I fought in one competition over there. I didn't win but I think I put up a good fight and picked up enough tips to help me over here.
"Let's see if they work this Saturday."
Trang is a popular destination for tourists with several sandy beaches along its coast and is famous for its coffee shops.
But these delights were far off for Karl, who fights in the 69kg category, as he gave up most of his annual leave from work to focus on training during his three weeks over there towards the end of last month.
Now back in Bradford, Karl works for a bathroom company during the day and puts in three hours' training each evening from Monday to Saturday.
He said: "It is very tough but after a while you get to enjoy it. I've got to put the hours in if I want to get anywhere."
He joined the Mungsarin gym in Barry Street, Bradford, at the start of the year and is coached by owner Nigel Fell, who is a long-time friend of Theiab Noonoung.
Nigel said: "Karl said he wanted to go over and I thought it would be a good chance for him to train with a top coach and former champion, so I put him in touch with Theiab.
"He's come a long way in a short space of time and I think the dedication and determination are there for him to do very well."
