A head teacher struggling to open her school on time has hit out at the chaos surrounding Bradford's education reorganisation.

Teachers at Fearnville Primary School, Tyersal, turned up at the weekend to move furniture into their 'new' mobile classrooms only to find they were not ready.

Head teacher Catherine Butler is infuriated by Bradford Council's claims that things are going according to plan.

"Nothing is running as smoothly as the Council said," she said, "They are just relying on the goodwill of teachers because they know we would stay all weekend to get things ready."

She said they had been promised a pair of new mobile classrooms but the ones that turned up in August were "awful - like something out of Beirut".

The outsides had been covered in graffiti and the interiors were filthy and needed new floors, basins and carpets. But in five weeks nothing had been done to prepare them. On Thursday she had crisis talks with contractors to decide whether the school would be able to open tomorrow as planned.

She was promised that it could, as the mobiles would be ready by Friday night. But staff turning up on Saturday to move in furniture found they were still not finished.

"Everyone is blaming each other," said Miss Butler. "Bovis is blaming the contractors and the contractors are saying they have got too many jobs."

Meanwhile, the list of schools expected to open later than planned is changing day by day. Grove House Primary School in Eccleshill is the latest to be added because of overrunning building work.

Head teacher Margaret Rookes said that the situation meant the school will now open tomorrow instead of today as had been planned.

And Queensbury School, which the Council had said would not open until today, has in fact been open since Thursday, as originally planned.

After a confusing series of about-turns the latest on Springwood Community Primary School, Manningham, is that years three to six will probably not be able to begin until Wednesday.

But head teacher Fran Warden has said that even that could be optimistic because of problems with the water supply. The rest of the school should have started classes today.
