Recycled car tyres could be used to surface the Spen Valley Greenway if tests prove it is suitable.
Old tyres could create hard wearing non-slip surfaces which could be rolled out in sections to cover the next stretch of the off-road path to be built from Heckmondwike to Ravensthorpe.
But 12 months of testing must first be carried out.
The innovative environmental scheme was the idea of businessman Graham Wiles who works for the Green Business Network.
The network helps small companies improve their environmental performance.
He said: "We decided to look at producing a ground block suitable for cycle paths and tow paths which was hard-wearing and non-slip.
"We had a trial run and recycled shredded car tyres with plastic."
He is now applying for landfill tax money to help pay for the scheme, which would cost about £70,000.
