Guiseley RANGERS A......17 MELTHAM.....14

For the first time in 20 years Guiseley Rangers fielded a second senior team, kicking off their campaign in Division Six of the Pennine League. The team was a blend of youth and experience and, though not yet fully organised, got off to a winning start.

The visitors were a very organised outfit and Rangers had to be on their mettle to withstand heavy early pressure. The first 30 minutes was stalemate, with both defences cancelling each other out. Then a mix-up in the home defence allowed the visitors' wingman to score under the posts, giving their kicker an easy conversion.

Five minutes before the break saw Rangers deservedly draw level. Scrum-half

Alistair Field kicked through in to the in-goal area, and full-back John Waite pounced like a gazelle to touch down. Scott Wade converted to give a half-time score of six points each.

Rangers had the slope in their favour in the second-half, and slick cross field passing finished with Alexander Bayfield racing to the corner for an unconverted try. It was 10 - 6 to the home team but the visitors were not finished and two tries and one conversion gave them a four point lead going into the final quarter of the game. Rangers hit back strongly and regained the lead when Scott Wade converted Alistair Field's individual try, scored direct from acting-half.

The final ten minutes saw Rangers having to defend sustained pressure from the visitors until Ross Kaberry's excellent one on one tackle retrieved possession and, with three minutes remaining Alistair Field's drop goal from 22 metres out finished the scoring to seal a fine first win for the 'A' team. This performance was a great effort of commitment and determination by all the team.
