Guiseley....................1

GUISELEY AFC warmed up for their expected AXA FA Cup tomorrow night, Friday, with a 1-0 win at Workington on Saturday.

After an indifferent start to the season Guiseley are starting to pick up a little and the victory achieved by a Benn Gallagher goal on Saturday extended their unbeaten run before they take on neighbours Farsley Celtic in the Axa FA Cup at Nethermoor on Friday night. (7.30 pm).

The match was switched to avoid congestion at Nethermoor on Saturday when the Airedale and Wharfedale Cricket League championship winning side Guiseley were expected to be in a last day title battle with big rivals Adel.

However, last Saturday's results settled the title issue. The decision had already been made to switch the soccer match and fuel restrictions permitting the game will go ahead at Nethermoor on Friday.

Manager Bobby Davison may have goalkeeper James Shutt back in action although Nigel Muttick gave some timely reminders in Saturday's game that he will not give up the jersey without a fight.

Both teams involved in the game on Saturday were managed by former Leeds United players - Guiseley of course by Bobby Davison and Workington by former United defender Peter Hampton.

It was a frustrating day for Hampton as his side suffered their fourth successive defeat by the odd goal.

Guiseley were gifted their goal when Alan Gray, who has been Workington's most consistent performer, underhit his back pass to goalkeeper Gary Hoggeth.

The former Manchester City youth player Gallagher anticipated well and nipped inbetween the two home players to place the ball in the net.

Workington had opened well forcing two or three chances through Brian Dawson, Gary Milne and Barry Irving but they were unable to take advantage as Muttick stood firm.

Guiseley went close to adding to their score when David Cooke's header hit the bar and was eventually cleared.

The only booking of the game was for Workington's teenage defender Andrew Jones who tripped Guiseley striker Paul Burke.

Guiseley's home game with Stocksbridge Park Steels on Tuesday was postponed due to the fuel crisis.

The postponement may allow some of Guiseley's injured players to recover with young full-back Danny Brown suffering a rib muscle injury at Workington and skipper Des Hazel out with a hamstring pull.

l Following the FA Cup tie on Friday Guiseley then face Farsley Celtic again at Throstle Nest next Wednesday in a league game.

Guiseley Reserves squandererd a two goal lead to share the spoils in a 2-2 draw with visitors Colwyn Bay last Saturday.

There was little support for skipper Ben Thackwray in midfield and Guiseley lacked bite up front with a number of players playing out of position.

Guiseley opened the scoring with a Rowland Egege tap in and then Phil Atkinson made it 2-0 but before the break Bay netted a well worked goal.

Early in the second-half Guiseley found themselves level when they conceded a penalty which gave young 'keeper John Lamb no chance.

The Reserves are lacking a little discipline at the moment and three players were booked on Saturday in Rowland Egege, Peter Sumner and Phil Metcalfe.

l The Reserves are hoping to travel to Colwyn Bay for the return game on Saturday, fuel crisis permitting.

l The Guiseley Youth Team are hoping to be in AXA FA Youth Cup action tonight, Thursday, when they are due to take on Yorkshire rivals Emley (7.30 pm).

In their last game they drew 0-0 at Selby Town.
