Keighley completed a league and cup double in the Skipton League last weekend.
The added the cup title to their Division One league success with a comfortable victory over Devon at Settle. Earlier in the week they narrowly beat Foulridge in the semi-final. Devon A completed a surprise easy victory over Silsden A when they were indebted to Chris and Diane Slater, and a rejuvenated Phil Tunney to beat the Cobbydalers despite good wins by Barry Turnbull and David Smith.
Sadly the final was an anti-climax for Devon A as they performed poorly against a good Keighley team. Richard Hargreaves started the Keighley onslaught backed up by Colin Jeffrey as they both recorded 21-7 wins. Only Andy Utley and Stephen Lofthouse won for the Skipton side - after they had both lost heavily against Silsden in the semi-final.
In the Hebden Bridge League Haworth are relegated from Division One after Denholme made certain of staying up by beating Oxenhope while Oakworth's promotion effort from Division Two led to abject failure.
Haworth promotion hopes in the Bradford League took another blow despite a narrow home win over Tyersal A.
Cross Roads A are the Valley Division One champions again and have led the league from day One. Lund A and former champions Oakworth A, who won the title regularly in the 70's and 80's, are relegated. A full round-up of all the final positions will be published soon.
County Star Chris Slater, of Devon, continues his relentless march in search of all the top honours. Despite losing in the County ABA Final as Yorkshire were beaten by Greater Manchester, the local hero has gone on to win the Morecambe Open, qualified for the Spen Victoira Millennium Finals and teamed up with his wife, Diane, to win the Skipton Mixed Doubles title at Silsden PF - all within 48 hours.
In the mixed event Chris and Di beat Devon colleague Roy Sanderson and Liz Bland of Oakworth 15-12 after reeling in an 8-1 lead with some excellent short bowling. Roy and Liz took the lead again at 12-11, but failed to trouble the marker again.
Losing semi-finalists were Chris and Pat Wilson, and David and Barbara Ayre of Grassington.
Len Buxton of Silsden is in action this weekend in the Yorkshire EE Cockroft final. Other events taking place this weekend include the Hebden four-man team preliminary rounds and Ladies Day at Lund Park.
The Dick Keighley Memorial Trophy was won by Wayne Smithies of Whinfield -- Dick's old club - who beat David Emmerson of Addingham 21-20 at Whins Woods. Andrew McLean of Oakworth reached the semi-final stage.
n One of the great characters of the local bowling scene, Ken Ickeringrill, has died after being ill for some time. Ken was an accomplished player at his peak, representing Prince, Smith and Stells, Silsden PF and Glen among other clubs. He was a popular character who was not afraid to speak his mind and will be sadly missed.
He comes from a well known bowling family and his daughter is married to Jimmy Horsfield, a member of another bowling dynasty.
