Devastated community centre bosses bidding to replace play equipment wrecked by firebugs were today dealt a massive blow to their plans.

Last month the Telegraph & Argus reported how officials at Shipley's Wrose Community Centre had launched an appeal to replace their purpose-built under-fives play area after it was targeted by arsonists.

They had hoped the appeal would make up the shortfall in any insurance payout but have now been told the outside play equipment, which cost £10,000 to install eight years ago, is not covered by their policy.

Community centre co-ordinator Bob Lee said the news was a massive blow.

But he vowed that the equipment, whose centrepiece featured a wooden toddlers den and castle with slides, would be replaced and urged people to turn out in force for a fundraising event on Saturday.

He said: "We were really hoping our insurance would stump up some of the money and we'd then make up the difference from the appeal.

"So it's more than a blow to find out we won't get anything on the insurance.

"These things cost a fortune and we're looking at having to raise about £10,000 to replace and install what's been damaged.'' Mr Lee added that young members of the Wrose Rascals playgroup had been devastated when they found out their play area had been destroyed. "It was a beautiful facility, enjoyed not just by the playgroup but by other children from the village.''

Proceeds from collections and raffles have so far generated some £200 for Wrose Pre-School Playgroup's Fire Appeal Fund and it is hoped Saturday's event, organised by local resident Ann Nicol, will raise hundreds more.

The event at the community centre on Wrose Road runs from 10am to 2pm. Anyone who wants to make a donation should contact Mr Lee on (01274) 588832.
