An Addingham man has won the chance to have his comedy script performed in front of an audience of top TV producers and directors.
Andrew Gale, 36, of Old Station Way, right, wrote a comedy based on his experiences as a street light attendant for Bradford Council and sent it to the Television Arts Performance Showcase (TAPS) which develops new writing talent.
Now over a year later the script - Superman's First Day - has been chosen out of hundreds of entries for a three-day comedy seminar in London
attended by industry big-wigs.
Over 20 budding scriptwriters will attend the conference this weekend and three will have their work performed by professional actors and filmed before a live studio audience.
"I was really excited when I found out my script had been chosen," said Mr Gale, who has previously written scripts for animated TV shows.
"I really want to get into writing live action scripts and have started work on a full-length series based on my one-off script."
He is particularly looking forward to picking up some tips from top TV comedy writers Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, famous for hit shows like Birds of a Feather and Goodnight Sweetheart.
"Even if my work isn't showcased, to meet two such successful writers will be fantastic. They are holding a script-writing surgery, giving advice on
writing and getting work produced," he said.
Mr Grace has now begun developing his script into a television series. "The series is based on this inept bloke who works for the council and gets drunk and thinks he's Superman," he said. "It's partly autobiographical but I don't want to say too much about that!"
Marie Macneill, production assistant at TAPS said a panel of readers had chosen Mr Gale's work because it was fresh and original. "We are looking for writers with individual voices and that is what we found in Mr Gale's script," she said.
