Division C

Despite already having won the Division C title, Pool seconds produced the performance of the season on Saturday, thoroughly outplaying a Kirkstall side bolstered by several first-teamers, and, in doing so, condemned them to another year in the bottom flight.

With memories still fresh from last season's cup-final, Pool made immediate inroads into a strong batting line-up with Winterburn taking a wicket with the first ball of the game and, from that point, they were never out of the driving seat.

Davey's accuracy ensured there was no respite for the home side and he induced several false shots on a bowler-friendly track in a deserved six wicket haul.

Virtually all the chances offered were snapped up and the ground fielding was intense, yielding only a handful of boundaries all afternoon as Kirkstall crawled to a meagre 83 all out. Despite a drying wind, the pitch was still going to be a key factor in the result and the visitors knew runs would be at a premium, especially against an opening bowler who was a couple of yards quicker than anybody in the division.

Towers collected his fair share of bruises but stuck gamely to the task and both Davey and Wood picked up vital runs whilst at the crease. Wickets fell at regular enough intervals to keep Kirkstall interested but in the end it was left to Haines and Parsons to guide Pool home with some lusty blows.

This performance was the perfect culmination to a season in which the whole second team squad produced an unwavering level of skill, commitment and team spirit.

Several individuals provided match-winning feats but all the players can feel justifiably proud in their efforts, which, if matched next season, will see the team go from strength to strength.

*Pool 113-8 (R Bolton 37, A Barbour 3-23, A Coates 3-5); Kirkstall 117-0 (D Wonfor 54 no, S Bashir 44 no). Kirkstall won by ten wickets.

*Pool Mills 237-8 (S Fitzsimmons 129, R Lester 20, A Cowgill 3-82); Olicanians 100 (S Ford 21, R Wilkinson 5-32, S Fitzsimmons 3-44). Pool Mills won by 137 runs.
