Rawdon Golf Club

THE Cowling Trophy, an 18-hole Fourball Better Ball Bogey Competition, was played on Saturday September 9, at Rawdon Golf Club. The winners with plus nine were K Maskill and B Craven, P Davies and S Clark were second with plus seven, beating K Smethills and J Lawson into third place on countback.

The Men's September Stableford was played on Sunday, September 10, in wet conditions. Three of the first team players battled it out in Division One with club captain Peter Davies (three) taking the honours with 42 points, Mathew Marston (two), a close second, 42 points, and Craig Shackleton (five) third with 42 points.

In Division Two Ian McMeekins (21) won with 42 points. Ken Garbett (20) tied for second with Stuart Midgley (24) with 40 points but Ken had the better back run.

The finals of the club's major knockout competitions were played on Sunday, September 17, and resulted in some excellent golf.

In the Scratch Matchplay final club captain Peter Davies beat Andrew Coverdale seven and six. The fact that Andrew was only one over par gross gave some indication of the quality of the golf.

In the Ross Cup Aaran Atkinson beat Mick Hall two and one. The Summer Foursomes winners were Steve Clark and Phil White, who beat Alan Armitage and Terry Wilson two and one. In the Nicholson Cup Steve Wilson lost to Richard Smalley two and one. The David Head Trophy was won by Martin Grattan with a 36-hole scores of 74 plus 74 against John O'Brian's 79 plus 76.

stableford

THE annual Golf Foundation 7/8th Stableford Competition took place last Wednesday and despite any difficulties felt by the fuel crisis there was a very good turnout. The winner, Sue Towler, with 34 points, was the recipient of a very nice brooch and the runner-up was Helen Birdwood with 33 points. The event raised £27 for the Golf Foundation.

At the presentation in the clubhouse afterwards lady captain Cathy Lambert had a number of other presentations to make and results to declare as these had not been possible during the last two weeks. The result of the qualifying stableford on August 9 was: 1, Linda Burton, 48 points; 2, Melanie Thompson, 41; 3, Jane Sheldon, 38.

Medal Seven results were: 1, Linda Burton, 95-22-73; 2, Lynn Yeadon, 97-24-73; 3, Sue Towler, 89-14-75. The winner of the September Medal by tradition always receives a lovely LGU pendant and this year it went to Cathy Lambert, lady captain, with 91-22-62; 2, Pauline Brook, 91-20-71; 3, Ann Wilson, 114-40-74; 4, Jill Guthrie, 110-33-77. The winner of the Harrison Trophy was Karen French.

Finally we learned that of the three teams which went to Skipton for the AM/AM, we were successful in taking third place. Our winning team of Sue Towler, Heather Smith, Helen Marshall and Ann Wilson received some very nice bottles of wine.

Ilkley Ladies

TWO of the most consistent players at Ilkley Golf Club, Sally Ognall (14) and Daphne Hawkins (15), won through to the final of the Moor Cup, a match play competition off handicap. Sally started well, winning the first two holes, and at the third Daphne unusually drove into the river.

However, as the match progressed, Daphne raised her game to draw all square and with neither player giving anything away with loose shots putting became more and more important. Daphne continued to tighten her game and eventually won a very keenly contested match three and two. Congratulations to Daphne Hawkins on winning the Cup and to runner-up Sally Ognall for such a fine game of golf.

Congratulations and good luck to Ann Newman and Judy Sherwin, who have qualified for the ELGA Millennium Foursomes Finals, to be played at Edgbaston Golf Club on October 17. Playing at Bedale Golf Club last Sunday, despite starting badly by losing the first two holes, to their great delight they finally won two and one and are very excited at the prospect of playing in the finals.
