Guiseley......................0
Farsley CELTIC............1
A WOEFUL, passionless performance from Guiseley saw their FA Cup trail end virtually just as soon as it began.
A qualifying round win over Skelmersdale at the second attempt saw them pitted against local rivals Farsley Celtic on Friday night and although the floodlights were switched on Guiseley certainly weren't.
The ignominy of losing to their arch rivals was a bitter pill to swallow but not perhaps as bitter as the taste left by their lack lustre performance which saw some of their faithful fans trudging out before the end.
Guiseley produced some promising moves in the early stages but it was defender Simon Trevitt who went closest for them with a volley which went just wide. Guiseley also made loud appeals for a penalty when Des Hazel was brought down in the area amidst a cluster of Celtic players.
Guiseley 'keeper Nigel Muttick made a couple of fine saves, one a spectacular effort from former Guiseley hit man Ian Blackstone. Muttick also kept out a good effort by Phil Turner and a fierce shot from Celtic hero Robbie Whellans who delighted in returning to Nethermoor to plunder a 75th minute winner with a looping header following a Phil Turner free-kick.
It was a disastrous night all round for Guiseley for the FA Cup offers financial rewards for each round reached and any money is welcomed by all non-league clubs in the present financial climate.
Guiseley have a lot to do to make up to their faithful supporters following last season's relegation. An early exit from the FA Cup and a mediocre start to the league season has left them treading water at the moment.
They have players with a great deal of ability but they need to show more pride and passion if they are to make any impact.
It was just such pride and passion that saw the Reserves to a superb 5-0 win at Colwyn Bay on Saturday. With manager Brett Ferriday away his assistant Steve Daykin took charge and his young side played out of their skins to provide an excellent display.
The scoring was opened by the ever impressive skipper Ben Thackwray with a long range shot into the top corner. A rejuvenated James Elliott then netted as Guiseley took a 2-0 interval lead against a side which included some first teamers with Colwyn Bay not having a UniBond game.
His goal came following a brilliant through ball by Steve Daykin and he added a second early in the second-half after good work by Phil Atkinson who beat his man out wide and put in a perfect cross for Elliott to head home.
Youth team player Danny McCartney popped up to head in Phil Metcalfe's chipped free-kick.
Daykin involved all three substitutes in the second-half frolic and on a day of excellent goals perhaps the best was saved for last.
Left-back Nathan Adams made a superb overlap on the left wing and netted a superb goal to crown a magnificent display by the whole team.
Guiseley were due to play Farsley Celtic again last night, Wednesday, at Throstle Nest in a league game. On Saturday they travel to Vauxhall while the Reserves entertain Leek Town (3 pm). The first team entertain Lincoln in the League Cup on Tuesday when the Reserves travel to Marine.
