THE seach is on for men -- and women -- who want to join the ranks of soccer referees.

Former footballers, those still in the game and club officials are being invited to join a course being organised by the Keighley Referee's Association.

"This is not just something for old players to get into, more and more women are becoming referees and there have been teenage girls taking the course over the last year," said organiser Kevin Trowers.

Even players who are still involved in the game can gain from taking the course to get a deeper understanding of the rules.

"We are particularly keen to get club officials involved. With the current shortage of officials in local sport it may be that they will be called on to officiate at a game from time to time and they will find it much easier if they have taken the course.

"I would also like to see someone involved with every junior team holding an official qualification," he said.

There is a small charge of £5 for adults and £2.50 for juniors from 14-17 to cover the cost of publications used during the course.

"People who are thinking of taking part should not be put off by thinking it will be too difficult, in all the years we have been running this course we haven't had one person fail," he said.

The sessions are to be held at the Albert Hotel, Keighley, starting at 7pm on October 3. For more information contact Kevin Trowers on 01535-216154 or 07771-625801.
