A firm has stepped in to rescue a charity that helps disabled people receive computer training.

Federal Mogul has spent £30,000 to make one of its office blocks fully wheelchair accessible, so the charity Data can move in.

The training agency, which is the only independent organisation in Bradford to offer free IT training to disabled people, was threatened with closure because it had nowhere to go.

Bradford Council said it had to leave its previous premises at Broomfield House in Bolling Road and the charity was struggling to find somewhere suitable it could afford.

Finally it found spare offices in Neville Road, Bradford, and owners Federal Mogul agreed to pay the costs of making the premises disabled-friendly.

Catherine Portman, manager of Data, said: "We now have fantastic new facilities for our students which are much better than Broomfield House. This is a much better learning environment."

The new building is all on the ground floor and accessible with disabled parking spaces, a ramp to the front door, widened doorways, special doors and a disabled toilet.

Bringing the building up to scratch has cost £30,000 - butFederal Mogul were happy to help, said Denis O'Shea, the firm's engineering manager. "We are a big employer in Bradford, employing about 700 people, and we like to look after our local community," he said.

"We had extra office space and a number of companies were interested, but it's nice to have Data here because it is a great organisation and such a worthwhile cause."

Data's new term has started this week and there are still a handful of places on courses available. For the most popular courses, the charity operates a waiting list. All the training is free.

Mrs Portman said: "We have students with a wide variety of disabilities and health problems - our service is really for people who feel their health is affecting their ability to work.

"About 20 per cent of our students go on to find jobs and another 30 or 40 per cent go on to further education, training or voluntary work."
