Underwater search teams were dredging a lake in Bingley today after reports that a boy had tumbled into the water.

The frogmen resumed the hunt for the boy in Coppice Pond at St Ives Park at around 9am today after spending hours yesterday with fire crews searching for the boy, despite being unable to confirm whether anyone had actually fallen in.

A fisherman phoned emergency services yesterday at around 6pm to say he had seen a boy on a boat passing by him but when he turned around again after hearing a splash, the child had vanished.

Fire crews from the Shipley and Bingley stations joined police divers for the search but had not managed to find anyone by the time the search was called off as night closed in.

The police force's helicopter - and its infra-red equipment - was also called into the search.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "We are not sure as yet if a boy fell in, although we are not doubting what the fisherman said.

"A boy may have fallen in but then pulled himself out of the lake and simply left the boat behind, at this stage we do not know.

"But until we know either way we will keep searching and the divers went back in today to see if they could find anything.

"We have not had any reports of a boy missing."
