HUNDREDS of people in Ilkley are to be invited to have flu jabs in time for winter following the launch of a Government campaign.
For the first time ever, the immunisation campaign is being aimed at people aged 65 and over.
In previous years the vaccine has been recommended for everyone over 75, but studies by the Joint Council for Vaccines and immunisation have now shown that there are significant health benefits in giving it to people aged between 65 and 75.
The campaign is also aimed at people of all ages who are more at risk from flu, including those with underlying medical conditions such as chronic respiratory, renal or heart disease, diabetes, impaired immunity and people in residential or nursing homes.
Over the next few weeks people in Ilkley will receive invitations from their family doctor or from Bradford Health Authority asking them to book an appointment at their GP surgery to have their free flu jab.
Dr Ruth Gelletlie, Bradford's flu immunisation co-ordinator, said: "We are encouraging everyone over 65 to have the flu jab. Having the jab can lessen the complications of flu and reduces the number of patients who need to be admitted to hospital over the winter.
"Some people may have already made arrangements to have the vaccination, but I am asking those who haven't to contact their own GP practice to arrange a suitable appointment time."
Further information about the flu jab can be found in leaflets available from GP surgeries, by contacting the doctor or practice nurse or by calling NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.
