Keighley bowlers fought out the final of Skipton's event of the season - the Norman Johnstone Handicap.

The colourful character from Rolls Royce donated prize money for the competition some years ago, and Keighley bowlers have kept a grip on the title in recent years.

This time it was Neil Hargreaves who had plenty to shout about on the Broughton Road green when he beat three Keighley team mates to take the title. He defeated Mick Bastow before following up with victory over his father, Trevor Hargreaves who had earlier put favourite Chris Slater out of the running.

The final was ahead-to-head between Neil and last year's winner Jamie Cunningham with Hargreaves taking the title with a 21-18 victory.

Chris Slater soon returned to winning ways with a 21-12 victory over Tony Throup to win the Tadcaster Magnet Sports event. He has also qualified for the TPA event at Blackpool and will team up with his wife, Diane, in the Cleveleys Pairs.

Chris also appears in the Spen Victoria Millennium Classic Final on Saturday at 4.00pm.

The last Valley League event, the End of Season Doubles, was held at Steeton in terrible conditions on Sunday. Emerging from the rain-soaked competition were holder Stephen Pickles and his new partner Eddie hall, who beat Dave Smith and Phillip Dowgill 21-20 in an exciting game.

The main attraction this weekend is the Featherstone Trophy to be held at Silsden Bowling Club, starting at 9am. The competition is sponsored by SpecSavers Opticians and has attracted many top starts. Haworth have taken the Burgess Ford Cup in Division One with Cross Hills A runners-up. Lund Park B have taken the John Holmes Cup as winners of Division Two with Skipton Devon in runners-up spot. The Veterans Doubles Knock Out Trophy winners were Dennis Smith and Gordon Bennett of Lund Park with Rita Bland and Ivan Stone in second place.
