Three people, including a Bradford woman, were under armed guard in hospital today after suffering gunshot wounds, police said.

Officers were called to a report of a shooting in Chapeltown, Leeds, early yesterday and found the woman suffering injuries to her leg.

Two men were later also admitted to St James's Hospital, Leeds, one suffering a leg wound and one with a wound to his wrist. A West Yorkshire police spokesman said: "All three are under armed guard in hospital. The injuries are relatively minor."

Three men have been arrested and were being questioned by detectives, added the spokesman.

Detective Chief Superintendent Paul Johnston, leading the inquiry, confirmed the woman injured in the shooting was a 36-year-old from Bradford.

The two men wounded were aged 26 and 21 and from the Leeds area.

"We are currently interviewing three men in connection with this incident - two from Leicester, aged 29 and 33, and a 30-year-old man from the West Sussex area," said Det Ch Supt Johnston. Police believe a large number of people had gathered in the area for a blues party and are appealing for witnesses.

"It's the local community that holds the key to this investigation," said Det Ch Supt Johnston.

He said the incident was believed to involve at least two people with handguns. No weapons have been recovered.

Det Ch Supt Johnston said it was far too early to link today's incident with the spate of shootings in Leeds over the past six months. Since March the Leeds area has been hit by a series of shootings, resulting in two deaths and seven woundings.

A man has been arrested in connection with one of the incidents and charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery and arson.
