A six-year-old boy might not walk again after suffering terrible injuries when he was mown down by a hit-and-run driver.

Usman Hamid, of Amberley Street, Bradford, was hit by a red Vauxhall Cavalier as he tried to cross Barkerend Road, Bradford.

As the Cavalier continued to drive on, Usman was run over by a second car as he lay badly injured on the ground.

Today, his mother Shakila Hamid spoke of her contempt for the hit-and-run driver and said she feared her son, who has broken his legs and back, might now be paralysed.

Mrs Hamid said she had been upstairs looking after Usman's baby brother when he sneaked outside the house to play last Thursday evening.

"How could anyone do this to my son?," she said.

"I looked all over for him I couldn't find him. I think he had gone out the back door to play.

"Then two boys came to the door and told me there had been an accident.

"I rushed out into the street and I saw him. It was a terrible sight. There were a lot of people around helping but I just fainted.

"When I came around I was just crying, I knew it was very serious.

"He's broken his back and his legs, I don't know if he will walk again. He's also damaged his kidney."

"They should find the driver that did this and punish him. I don't know how someone could not stop when they've run over a child. It's so callous.

Usman, a pupil of Bradford Moor Primary School, was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary but later transferred to Leeds General Infirmary's intensive care unit.

Mrs Hamid said she had been at her son's bedside since the accident and that he had undergone a four-hour operation to pin his legs on Saturday.

Today a Leeds General Infirmary spokesman described Usman's condition as critical but stable.

She said: "It's awful. He's covered in bandages and he looks really bad."

The accident happened as Usman was crossing the road outside the Miryshy pub, in Barkerend Road.

Drinkers inside the pub heard the screech of tyres as the youngster was hit and rushed outside to help.

Pub manager Paul Mitchell said about six customers helped to lift the second car, a Mazda, off the boy before emergency services arrived.

Police have renewed an appeal for help in tracing the driver of the Cavalier. Anyone with information should contact them on (01274) 376459 or 0845 6060606.
