Queensbury coach Craig Richards - standing in for his brother Basil - was handsomely rewarded for his decision to rest injured scrum-half Carl Smith and second row forward Gary Prentice as his side earned a 36-4 win at home to Upton in the second round of the Tetley Yorkshire Cup.

The home team were hardly troubled after stand-off Lee Charlton produced a defence-splitting pass to send Steven Eyles racing down the wing and prop Andrew Senior took the inside pass to score, leaving scrum-half Johnny Feather with a simple conversion. Quick tries from Charlton and hooker Stephen Senior, again converted by Feather, saw Queensbury 18-0 up by half-time.

Upton managed an unconverted try soon after the re-start, but as their heavy pack started to tire, Queensbury cut loose with touchdowns from Matthew Galtress, Trevor Stead, Liam Slouch and Andrew Barraclough.

Clayton won 17-10 at home to Batley Boys, though coach Paul Gill described their performance as 'woeful'. Stand-off and captain Darren Collins set an early example with a 60-metre interception try.

Clayton's other tries came from Anthony Brannon, who finished off the only good handling move of the game, and Craig Pickthall with a typical prop's effort. Hooker Andrew Barnes slotted over a drop goal.

Pennine League Division Two pace-setters West Bowling A gave Premier Division side Ovenden a tough time before losing 26-5. Bowling trailed just 14-5 with 15 minutes to go but the Halifax side dug deep to finish strongly. Jason Woolham registered Bowling's points with two penalties and a drop goal.

Birkenshaw lost agonisingly after looking well on their way to the third round when they led 12-4 at Brotherton thanks to tries from centre Morton Robinson and stand-off Jarrod Toulson who landed the two conversions.

They went further in front when hooker Carl Wilcock crossed and Toulson added the conversion, but an injury to Jason Brooksbank disrupted them and the Castleford side hit back to win 19-18.

In Pennine League Division Two Wyke lost 16-14 to Hollinwood while Odsal Sedbergh were hammered 43-12 by visitors Huddersfield YMCA, defeats which leave both clubs at the foot of the table.

Division Three new boys Victoria Rangers remain unbeaten after their 8-0 home victory over Slaithwaite Saracens.

Hooker Ray Greenwood set the ball rolling with an early touchdown converted by his brother Phil while winger John Belcher was in fine form with two tries. Mick Foulding, Rob Sowden and Kenny Smith joined him with tries.

Queensbury A gained revenge for last season's Shipley Trophy final defeat by swamping Underbank Rangers A 54-10.

Steven Gallagher took the plaudits in the nine-try romp with 22 points. Other tries came from Matthew Cooper, who got two, Neil Hobson, Paul Drake, Shaun Fallon, John Batters, Michael Nero and Chris Hardaker.

West Bowling B lost the Division Four derby 22-20 against Clayton. Martin Wright, Craig Chapman and Mark Romano scored tries with Trevor Tordoff kicking a goal.

In Division Five Shipley made it three successive wins when they beat Emley Moor A 28-24. Teenage forward Adam Dutton was outstanding for Shipley whose points came from tries for Guy Dunn, Sam Bentley, Alan Hobson and Dave Williams (2). Darren Ellerton was on target with four conversions.

In Division Six Victoria Rangers A lost a thriller 22-20 at Huddersfield YMCA A. Damian Cope scored two tries with Dave Taglioni and Paul Robson getting one each and Andy Taylor kicking two goals.
