HARD pressed farmers are being given help on how to apply for fresh government grants.
Otley based Lower Dales Training is holding a special advice day when speakers from MAFF, Business Link and Dales and Moors Support Project will be on hand to give help.
The free event, which will take place at Kettlesing Village Hall on Thursday, October 19, will be open to all farmers whether they plan to carry on farming or are planning to diversify.
Jeannette Wight, from Lower Dales Training, said with this year's harvest one of the hardest on record, farmers were facing even tougher times.
"The message we're putting across is don't miss out. Farmers should come to find out what is available and how to get it.
"Previously, assistance was available to those in the 5B less favoured areas, but this next round of funding will be available across the country.
"At the moment, we do not yet know how much and when, but at the advice day there will be speakers who will be able to offer farmers the up to date information."
Mrs Wight added that there was often confusion about the grant system.
"Confusion about the grant situation is common - even those due to administer it are only just learning what will be available.
Announcements are due and that is why this meeting on October 19 is so timely."
At the last grant advice meeting held by Lower Dales, around half of farmers opted to take up grants and diversify.
Mrs Wight said: "Some have set up livery or bed and breakfast
businesses, some have become HGV drivers, some have used the money
to keep up to date with their
Health and Safety requirements and some have started a whole new way of life. "
She added others had used grants to improve their farming skills.
The meeting at Kettlesing Village Hall on Thursday, October 19 is due to start at 12.30pm.
