Quick thinking by two Keighley police officers enabled an old soldier to take part in the annual Remembrance Day parade.

Former Duke of Wellington Regiment soldier Bill Edmondson, 68, from Carr Lane, Riddlesden, had given up hope of attending the church service and parade after mislaying his regimental beret.

But thanks to the efforts of section officer Steve Baldam and PC James McGowan he was provided with a replacement just in time.

When they heard about Mr Edmondson's plight late on Saturday night, the two officers, both former soldiers, sprung into action and contacted the Duke of Wellington's Territorial Army Keighley detachment, based at the Drill Hall, in Lawkholme Lane.

And with the help of Sergeant Nick Mallas they were able to find a beret and present it to the former TA soldier.

Mr Edmondson says: "It was very good of them to find me the beret, and I would like to say a big thankyou to the police officers and to the TA."

Section officer Baldam says: "It was great to help out an old soldier.

"Mr Edmondson was obviously disappointed at the thought of not being able to take part in the parade in his beret, and I am grateful to Sgt Mallas and the TA for responding so quickly."

Mr Edmondson served with the Duke of Wellington's for five years until 1965.

Bryan Smith, secretary of the Royal British Legion's Keighley branch, says: "We would like to say a thankyou to the police officers -- their efforts are very much appreciated."

Section officer Baldam, who is a member of Keighley's Special Constabulary, is urging others to join up.

Special constables receive full training to undertake part-time voluntary duties as police officers.
