CAMPAIGNERS behind an appeal to rebuild vital sports and
community facilities have called for more effort to support their cause.
Otley Town Sports and Social Club is hoping to repair and
refurbish its clubhouse, which is used by hundreds of people, through its Brick Appeal - but chairman Richard Askham is disappointed at the response from some sections of the community since its launch before Christmas.
He told the Wharfedale Observer: "I continue to receive contributions from some of those with longstanding connections to Otley Town. But I am still disappointed at the response from various groups, like people who have derived a lot of enjoyment out of 'Town' in the past, who are now financially able to put something back into the game and the club without any time and effort.
"They still fail to make the effort to write a cheque.
"I appreciate the difficulties of local businesses making a living but would have thought that there remains scope and opportunity for a contribution to this important community facility --some businesses have and some have very obviously and noticeably failed."
He also said that, for the most part, parents and players had not been very forthcoming. Mr Askham added: "We, the management, intend to do better. I hope that everyone out there who falls into the above three categories will make every effort in the next few weeks so that urgent and essential work can be financed."
l Meanwhile, a plumber is desperately needed to fit showers and heating to changing rooms and clubhouse. More details from Mr Askham on (01943) 463842.
