Mr James Callaghan is Britain's new Prime Minister. In the third and final ballot for the election of a new Labour leader, the 64-year-old Foreign Secretary defeated Mr Michael Foot. Mr Callaghan is expected to broadcast to the nation tonight. The result was announced at a packed meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party, and shortly afterwards Mr Harold Wilson was on his way to Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation to The Queen.

The problem of pagan youth was mentioned by the Rev. Eric Bilton, Superintendent Minister of Bradford Methodist Central Hall, last night. At one time, he said, the wayward boy and girl went to Sunday school, and their parents might be church attenders. "Some of the young people with whom we have to deal nowadays have an utterly pagan background. They don't pour scorn on the Bible - they have no Bible to scorn."
